Family Emergency

Dear Parents,

I have a family emergency and will be flying home Friday morning and returning Tuesday night. I've carefully planned lesson plans for the substitute teacher: Mr. Joaquin. Your children will be well-cared for.

Of course there are no classes on Friday. Students will have a math test on Monday and a spelling test on Tuesday. They will also be watching a curriculum-related movie, working on Chapter 11 in social studies, and reading.

Thanks for your understanding,

Sue St.

Substitute Tomorrow

I, along with a number of other teachers and administrators, will be involved in day-long 5 year strategic planning meetings for InterAmerican Academy tomorrow and Saturday. I'm really excited about this opportunity.
I've created lesson plans that move the students forward while I am gone. We have an agreement that they are going to be amazing with the sub. :-)

Free Concert!

On Monday, January 24th, there will be a short concert of Brazilian music performed at the InterAmerican Academy. The performer is Raimundo Nilton, husband of Valerie Terman, the music teacher at school. Nilton is a music teacher and performer in Brasilia, Brazil and would like to give a concert to us while he is here visiting for the month of January. He will perform on both the violin and sing with the guitar. The concert will begin at 2:45 in the cafeteria and everyone is invited to attend.

Happy New Year

The new year is a time for new beginnings.
I spent a lot of time here over the holidays preparing for the new year.
We're starting the year with the following units:

Reading: Emphasis on the reading strategies of questioning and inferring combined with study of non-fiction (in social studies and science) and historical fiction genres.
Writing: We're doing a short unit on Writing on Demand (moving through the writing process quickly to produce results in one class period). Then we will move into a longer unit on writing essays.
Communication: We're doing a week-long unit on listening skills and active listening. We will be working on collaboration skills in our hands-on science activities.
Science: We're starting a unit on levers and pulleys
Social Studies: We're beginning a mega-unit on how History is Intertwined. We will study Chapters 10-15 in the Social Studies book and work to answer the following essential questions:
  • What caused the Revolutionary War?
  • Which side would you have chosen and why?
  • When is it right to revolt?
  • What does freedom for all mean?
  • Why is civic responsibility required of people who live in a society based on the ideal of individual liberty?
  • What skills do we need to participate effectively in a democracy?
  • How important is compromise? Can compromise be wrong?
