Food and Nutrition

We are beginning our last science unit - Food and Nutrition. Since we've finished doing much of what we need to accomplish this year, we'll be able to spend a lot of time during the day on science. You will learn about fats, sugars, proteins, vitamins, and ways of testing for some of these nutrients in food. Our culminating project will be to plan and bring a lunch to school that conforms to guidelines for total number of calories and for the number of calories contributed by different nutrients. We'll also become familiar with the labels on food and the kinds of information provided for the consumer.

Pioneer Book Clubs

One of our objectives for 5th grade is to work with primary documents. We've done that with the Constitution and various other documents in our Civil Rights unit. Now, we have a chance to use primary documents with my great-grandmother's diary, a newspaper article written by my great-grandfather, and recollections written by my grandfather. I've compiled them in short book form. The reading is a bit more difficult as the style is a bit old-fashioned.

Some questions to consider:

What is a pioneer?

Why would someone leave the life they have and set off to begin a new life as a pioneer?

Would you enjoy pioneer life or would you be bored?

What are the different perspectives or point of view that Cal, Ola, and Fred had of the same events?

What would you need to take with you if you had to take everything with you in a covered wagon to start a new life?

Do you think Cal and Ola made a good decision to move to New Mexico? Why or why not?

Each group will meet each day to discuss in their Book Club. Come prepared with thoughtful sticky notes to discuss.

Club del Libro Pioneros
Uno de nuestros objetivos para 5to Grado es trabajar con documentos importantes. Hemos hecho eso con la Constitución y varios otros documentos en nuestra unidad de los Derechos Civiles. Ahora, nosotros tenemos una oportunidad para usar los documentos primarios con el diario de mi bisabuela, un artículo del periódico escrito por mi bisabuelo, y recolecciones escritas por mi abuelo. Yo los he compilado en forma de un corto libro. La lectura es un poco más difícil pues el estilo es un poco anticuado.
Algunas preguntas para considerar:
¿Qué es un pionero?
¿Por qué alguien dejaría la vida que tienen y saldrían fuera para empezar una nueva vida como un pionero?
¿Usted disfrutaría la vida pionera o usted se aburriría?
¿Cuáles son las perspectivas diferentes o punto de vista que Cal, Ola, y Fred tenían de los mismos eventos?
¿Qué necesitaría tomar con usted si usted tendría que tomar todo en un carro cubierto para empezar una nueva vida?
¿Usted piensa que Cal y Ola tomaron una decisión buena para mudarse a Nuevo México? ¿Por qué o por qué no?
Cada grupo se encontrará cada día para discutir en su Club del Libro. Venga preparado con sus pensamientos en notitas adhesivas para discutir.

Dear grade five parents,

The grade five students have successfully completed their first ever series of MAP testing! Thanks to everyone for allowing us to pilot this testing on your children.

Preliminary findings indicate that overall Ms Steven's class did very well. Mr Morris, Ms Stevens and myself will meet this week to analyze the data and present our findings back to the parents by the end of next week. Each student will receive their own information sheet.

Los estudiantes de quinto Grado han completado con éxito su primera serie de pruebas de MAP! Gracias a todos por permitirnos pilotear esta prueba con sus niños. Los resultados preliminares indican que la clase de Mrs. Steven lo hizo muy bien. Mr Morris, Mrs. Stevens y yo nos encontraremos esta semana para analizar los datos y presentar nuestros resultados a los padres a finales de la próxima semana. Algebra

We are doing a two week mini-unit on algebra. The goal of algebra instruction in 5th grade is to develop students' algebraic thinking, and build a foundation of understanding when they are young so that they can be successful in their later, more formal study of algebra.

Yesterday, we studied input/output graphs where students guessed the "rule" represented on a T-chart. Have your child show you and have you guess the rule!

Today we worked with true sentences, false sentences, and open sentences.

2 + 4 = 6 (true sentence)

2 + 4 = 8 (false sentence)

2 + x = 10 (open sentence)

Algebra
Nosotros estamos haciendo una mini-unidad de álgebra en dos semanas. La meta de instrucción de álgebra en 5to Grado es desarrollar el pensamiento algebraico de los estudiantes, y construir fundamentos para su entendimiento cuando son jóvenes para que puedan tener el éxito después, en un estudio más formal de álgebra.

Ayer, nosotros estudiamos gráficos del input/output dónde los estudiantes adivinaron la"regla" representados en un mapa T. ¡Su niño tiene que mostrar y usted adivina la regla!

Hoy nosotros trabajamos con las frases verdaderas, frases falsas, y las frases abiertas.

• Poetry final - in class - looking closely at a poem. Turn in booklets for a grade.

Friday:

• Present Poetry projects (bring projects on a pen drive)
• Social Studies exam (the essay questions that are on the blog). You'll write them in class.
