Reading Suggestion

There are many allusions to myths, fairy tales, and Bible stories in books we read beginning now and continuing throughout our adult reading life. Just today we came across allusions to Moses leading the Israelites out of slavery and Lazarus being raised from the dead as we read about the Underground Railroad.

You may want to think about purchasing your child collections of myths, fairy tales, and Bible stories so they can understand the allusions as they read.

Multiplication of Fractions

This week we are finishing up the multiplication of fractions unit. Friday we will have a test. I have taught the students a number of strategies to do their fractions: draw a picture, the traditional algorithm, and simplify first using prime factors and then multiply. Part of the way they will show their understanding of the concepts of fractions is to draw a picture to solve the problem. After that, they may use whatever strategy is easy for them. PLEASE make sure that your child is working on division facts as they are crucial when working with fractions!

Esta semana nosotros estamos acabando la multiplicación de unidad de las fracciones. Viernes nosotros tendremos una prueba. Yo les he enseñado varias estrategias a los estudiantes para hacer sus fracciones: dibujando, el algoritmo tradicional, y simplificar usando los factores primero y entonces multiplique. La parte de la manera que ellos mostrarán su comprensión de los conceptos de fracciones es dibujar un cuadro para resolver el problema. Después de eso, ellos pueden usar cualquier estrategia que sea fácil para ellos. ¡POR FAVOR asegúrese que su niño está trabajando en las tablas de multiplicar y en la división como ellos es crucial al trabajar con los fragmentos!

International Fair

The International Fair was a grand success; I so enjoyed looking at all the booths. Thanks so much to those students who helped set up, taught the children how to make God's eyes and paper flowers, and helped take down the booth -- you know who you are!

Please forgive me! This has been an insane week: coming back from vacation, preparing for the International Fair, and doing an inventory of the math cabinets. I've been tearing my hair out. Anyway, I realize that I have not kept up with the blog. Please forgive me!

On a lighter note, thanks so much for the lovely birthday party and gifts. 'Twas a blessing.

¡Por favor perdóneme! Ésta ha sido una semana loca: regresando de la vacación, preparando para la Feria Internacional, y haciendo un inventario de los armarios de matemática. Yo he estado tirándome de los pelos. Sin embargo, comprendo que yo no me he mantenido al ritmo del blog. ¡Por favor perdóneme!

En una nota más ligera, gracias tanto para la fiesta del cumpleaños encantadora y regalos. Fue una bendición.

We're back!

We're busy getting ready for this Saturday's International Fair - we just have a few more crafts to complete. We also started our mega-unit on slavery/Civil War/Civil Rights. During the slavery part we will study historical fiction, during the Civil War portion we will study biography, and during the Civil Rights portion we will study poetry. We will also be studying various documents (the Constitution, the Amendments, etc.). It's a great unit that ties reading, writing, and social studies together.

In math we continue to work on multiplying fractions.

In word work we'll continue with our spelling unit.
DON'T FORGET! THE INTERNATIONAL FAIR IS THIS FRIDAY FROM 11 - 2.

¡Estamos de regreso!
Estamos ocupados consiguiendo estar listos para la Feria Internacional de este sábado - apenas tenemos u nos pocas manualidades por completar. También empezamos nuestra mega-unidad en: Esclavitud/Guerra Civil / Derechos Civiles. Durante la parte de esclavitud estudiaremos la ficción histórica, durante la parte de la Guerra Civil estudiaremos la biografía, y durante la parte de los Derechos Civiles estudiaremos la poesía. También estaremos estudiando los varios documentos (la Constitución, las Enmiendas, etc.). Es una gran unidad que ata lectura, escritura, y los estudios sociales juntos.
En la matemática, continuamos trabajando en multiplicación de fracciones.
En el trabajo de palabra, continuaremos con nuestra unidad de ortografía.
