Math Test Unit 4

Dear Parents,

Despite giving extra teaching and review time to unit 4, a disheartening amount of students got a 1 on the test. I will give retakes on Monday, January 9th after school. That is the only possible date that I can give a retake and change a math grade on the math test. If your child misses that retake they will have to accept the grade.

There is good news, however. Some students did great.

Wednesday is a big day:
  • Bring Native American/Pioneer Living Museum projects in the morning.
  • We will set up for the museum, watch a Thanksgiving video, and finish our crafts.
  • Thanksgiving lunch is under the tented area (organized by Mrs. Andrade and Mrs. Escobar).

What Are You Thankful For?

  • I'm thankful for the beautiful world we live in--especially the gorgeous tropical flowers in Guayaquil.
  • I'm thankful for friends and family and co-workers. You make my life rich and joyous.
  • I'm thankful for my students. You push me to learn new ways to teach so that you understand. You also add much laughter to my life.
  • I'm thankful for Ms. Andrea, Mrs. Maya, and Mrs. Zambrano who work with me to teach you in 5th grade.
  • I'm thankful for the maintenance men and gardeners who work so hard to make IAA a lovely school--and with a smile.

Questions for end of unit social studies test

Today I gave the students the questions that we will be considering during our social studies unit on Encounters. Encounters between Europeans and Native Americans. In the Encounters unit, students are creating their projects, we are reading from our textbook and an historical fiction novel called Sign of the Beaver, and we are watching a variety of videos. Here are the questions we are considering:

  • Whose land was it? (The Native Americans or the Europeans who claimed it) Why?
  • How did the cultural beliefs held by the Europeans and Native Americans affect these encounters?
  • How did weaponry play a part in these encounters? Disease?
  • How did Native Americans and pioneers survive?
  • What's the difference between explorers, pioneers, and settlers?
  • How can a society make things right when a big wrong was committed against people in the past? (Like the Cherokee Indians taken from their lands)
P.S. There is no one right answer to these questions, but students need to back up their opinion with information they have learned in the course of the unit. Any one of these topics would make an interesting discussion in your homes. (*Hint*)

Religion Conversation

Talking about religion in a disrespectful way has been a problem in this class for at least the last year--4th and 5th grade. Some students think it started in 3rd grade. We had a wonderful conversation today connected to the Bill of Rights. This is what we decided:
  • We have many different religions and beliefs in this class, and there are many more religions in the world. We must learn now to respect other religions.
  • Many people prefer to keep their beliefs private. We MUST respect this.
  • Although we probably believe that our religion is correct, we MUST respect other's beliefs and not put them down--not even with our expressions or body language.
  • Our religion or our beliefs or our knowledge about our religion does not make us superior or inferior.
  • We need to be very careful how we discuss these things. Comments like, "He doesn't celebrate anything!" or "You don't know anything about this!" are incorrect. We even need to approach the whole subject of religion and beliefs VERY carefully. A respectful person would never walk up to another and just say, "What is your religion?" We need to be delicate in our dealings.
Anyway, it was great. Thanks!

  • Identify multiplication errors
  • Explain usefulness of making an estimate

  • Find landmarks for a data set (mean, median, mode, minimum, maximum, range)
  • Write and solve number sentences

Dear parents,

One of the famous freedoms that we have been talking about from the Bill of Rights is the Freedom of Religion that is guaranteed under the United States Constitution. I've asked the students to research their religion and make a poster about their religion. I've brought books in, but I want them to speak with you as well. Students should answer these questions:

1. Where does your religion believe that people came from? (Ex. God created them, we evolved from monkeys)
2. What does your religion believe happens to you when people die? (Ex. Goes to heaven or hell, reincarnation, etc.)
3. What does your religion teach about how we should live our lives?
4. What are some special celebrations of your religion?
5. Who do we follow? (Ex. Buddha, Jesus)
6. What are some general beliefs of your religion?

We are doing this to promote acceptance and understanding of each other under the Bill of Rights. If you do not follow a formal religion, you may adapt these questions to your family beliefs. Instead of having the title of "Buddhism" or "Catholicism" you can simply have the title of "Our Beliefs."

Either way, these are important questions to thoughtfully discuss with your children. This is due on October 6th.

Sue

Queridos padres,

5. ¿A quién seguimos? (Ex. Buda, Jesús)

Please send your design in an email to concursos@rescateanimal.net with your name and age to pre-qualify. Once you qualify, we will notify you by email. You will have to take your photograph to Expo Pet before 11 AM.

We will print the design on t-shirts. All profits will go towards the rescued animals. IMPORTANT: The winning design will be the property of Rescate Animal. Rescate Animal

We will be starting a class competition for Rescate Animal for badly needed supplies to help them do their good work of rescuing animals in danger, abandoned, neglected, and abused around Guayaquil.

Here is how we will proceed:

We will start collections from classrooms on the afternoon of September 12 (after the pet show) until September 22. We will announce the winning class at the Pet Expo on Sat. September 24 and again in the school newsflash. You may begin bringing in donations at your convenience.

The winning class will receive a special day with their name on it. This will include apizza party and a free dress day.

Attached is a flyer listing the items assigned to each class and the point value of each item. The class with the highest points(divided by the number of students in each class-to make it fair for the classes with fewest students to compete) at the end of the competition wins.

Rescate Animal has provided a listing of places where the prices are best value of most of the medical supplies. The classes maybring in the item itself or the monetary value of the item and NHS will purchase the items at the end of the competition. This will make it easier for students to donate as they wish and will be safer for the younger children whose parents may not wish their children to handle medical supplies. I have put some prices where I know them.

There is a file attached for each level including 1 for primary, 1 for intermediate/upper elementary, 1 for middle school, and 1 for high school. Notice at the end of the list there is a section of general donations which is the same for all groups.

For any questions, contact me.

Thank you, and good luck all.

Lyrics to Thankful

Thankful by Aaron Pritchard

I know I don't tell you near enough
My mind's always cluttered with other stuff
I race and I rush
I'm always tired and tangled

But I'm down here on the ground
Taking a good, hard look around
I wanna tell you now,
That I'm so thankful...

For every new day that I'm still breathing
This blue sky sun shine feeling, I'm feeling
For every moment I have
I'm so thankful...

For the beautiful colorful world that surrounds me
The love in the eyes of the people around me
I want you to know
I am so thankful

I think about that fiery crash
That night in the rain everything went black
I walked out without a scratch in the arms of an angel

But when I look out to the west
On a beautiful day at that red sunset
I know I've been so blessed
And I'm so thankful...

This blue sky sunshine feeling, I'm feeling
For every moment I have
I'm so thankful...

For the beautiful, colorful world that surrounds me
The love in the eyes of the people around me
I want you to know, God, that I am so thankful

I could count my blessings all day long
‘Cause once I start
The list goes on and on and on and on

The smile on my face, the hand I’m holding
From where I’ve been and where I’m going
For every moment I have, I’m so thankful

For the beautiful, colorful world that surrounds me
The love in the eyes of the people around me
I want you to know, God, that I am so thankful

I am so thankful for every new day that I'm still breathing
This blue sky sunshine feeling, I'm feeling
God, that I am so thankful

Lyrics to Somewhere Over the Rainbow (GLEE)

Oooooh Ooooooh

Somewhere over the rainbow way up high,
There's a land that I dreamed of once in a lullaby
haaaaai

Oh Somewhere over the rainbow skies are blue
And the dreams that you dare to dream really do come true
Uuuuuh

solo guitar

oooh someday I'll wish upon a star

And wake up where the clouds are far behind me
Where troubles melt like lemon drops
High above the chimney tops
That's where you'll find me.

Oh somewhere over the rainbow
Bluebirds fly
Birds fly over the rainbow.
Why then, oh why can't I?

Please practice

Write a Constitution

We're finishing up a unit on government. We've established a classroom government where I am "just" a citizen. So far, the checks and balances of the government seem to be working and the students are taking it quite seriously. The judicial branch deliberated the other day and decided that a law that had been passed by the legislature and signed by the president was unconstitutional.

The last assignment is for each student to write a constitution for either their family or InterAmerican Academy. Students are encouraged to get help and feedback from their families and even to ask their family if they would abide by the constitution for a week. The constitution must contain:

A Preamble
Article 1: Legislative branch (Who are they? How do they come into power? What powers do they have? What checks and balances are on their powers?)
Article 2: Executive branch (Same as above)
Article 3: Judicial branch (Same as above)
Article 4: Bill of Rights
Article 5: Responsibilities of citizens

The assignment is due Wednesday, May 11th and is being done at home. Students are encouraged to type their constitution.

The Great Debate

We had our "Whether the Colonies Should Have Independence from Great Britain" debate today. I was SOOOO impressed.

Each student took part in a panel of Loyalists or Patriots. First, each presented their opinion, and then they got to question each other. The group of students who were watching evaluated each person for 1) how well they knew their character, and 2) how well they presented their character.

Great job! The only bad thing was that I forgot my camera at home.

Monday, February 7, 2011

We've signed up for a great research compilation site called diigo.com. Students can highlight important parts of articles they read on the Internet, take notes online, and then post all their research to one place.
To do all this at home as well as at school they will need to download the diigo toolbar to your computer. It's easiest to do in Google Chrome, but can be done in any browser. (The students might need more help in other browsers.)
Simple go to www.diigo.com, select tools at the top of the page, and then download the tool bar.

MAP Test Class Results

These are the statistics that show whether students achieved their target improvement or not in the MAP test. As you can see, 91% of the students achieved between typical and high growth in reading and math, which is to be celebrated. 100% of the students achieved target improvement in language usage. As a teacher, I'm thrilled, although still bothered by the 9% who did not achieve expected growth.

The new year is a time for new beginnings.
I spent a lot of time here over the holidays preparing for the new year.
We're starting the year with the following units:

Reading: Emphasis on the reading strategies of questioning and inferring combined with study of non-fiction (in social studies and science) and historical fiction genres.
Writing: We're doing a short unit on Writing on Demand (moving through the writing process quickly to produce results in one class period). Then we will move into a longer unit on writing essays.
Communication: We're doing a week-long unit on listening skills and active listening. We will be working on collaboration skills in our hands-on science activities.
Science: We're starting a unit on levers and pulleys
Social Studies: We're beginning a mega-unit on how History is Intertwined. We will study Chapters 10-15 in the Social Studies book and work to answer the following essential questions:
  • What caused the Revolutionary War?
  • Which side would you have chosen and why?
  • When is it right to revolt?
  • What does freedom for all mean?
  • Why is civic responsibility required of people who live in a society based on the ideal of individual liberty?
  • What skills do we need to participate effectively in a democracy?
  • How important is compromise? Can compromise be wrong?
