Determining Importance

Determining importance is an important reading strategy. Actually, it's an important strategy in life. We are working on this strategy in our reading about immigration. We began with reading about transportation. Students need to highlight the most important information. Sometimes we work in a large group, sometimes small groups, and sometimes individually.

Proficient readers...

· identify key ideas or themes as they read
· distinguish important from unimportant information in relation to key ideas or themes in text. They can distinguish important information at
the word, sentence and text level.
· utilize text structure and text features (such as bold or italicized print, figures and photographs) to help them distinguish important from unimportant information

Proficient readers think:

The text was mostly about...
The author is trying to tell us that...
I learned...
The important details were...

Determinando la importancia es una estrategia de lectura importante. Realmente, es una estrategia importante en la vida. Estamos trabajando en esta estrategia en nuestra lectura sobre la inmigración. Expectation for Guided Reading

Students need to:

1. Read the assigned reading.
2. Prepare for the discussion.
3. Take part in the discussion.

Students receive grades for all three areas in each Guided Reading meeting. To prepare for the discussion, students must jot down their thinking - preferably on sticky notes - while they read. Their jottings can include:

• Any "clunks" (confusion) they experience whether it be at the word, sentence, paragraph, page, or chapter level.
• Questions they have.
• Connections they have.
• Wonderful sentences they have stalked.
• Places where they had to make an inference, or where they made a prediction.
• Places where something super-important happened.

New Units

We are continuing with our non-fiction unit, although now it has switched from reading non-fiction to writing non-fiction. We are writing a Gail-Gibbons-style non-fiction book on the topic of our choice. We will have our last Guided Reading conversations next week - except for the students who read Summer of Fire who finished a while ago.

We are beginning a new unit on Immigration. We've started with the book Esperanza Rising which is an interesting riches-to-rags tale where the wealthy Mexican family loses everything and moves to the United States to work in the fields. The book is based on the life of the author's grandmother. We'll be looking at why people immigrate, where they migrate from, and to where they immigrate. We'll look at the difference between the United States "melting pot" and the Canadian "mosaic".

We're also beginning a new unit in math - a geometry unit where we will investigate how to describe and classify two-dimensional figures, measure angles, find perimeter and area of rectangles, and create and describe similar shapes. This unit has a technology component which should be interesting.

We are also beginning mini-units on syllable division and how this helps with our spelling and capitalization.

Nuevas Unidades
Nosotros estamos continuando con nuestra unidad de non-ficción, aunque ahora hemos cambiado de leer la non-ficción a escribirla. Estamos escribiendo un libro de non-ficción de Gail-Gibbons del tema que hemos escogido. Tendremos nuestras últimas conversaciones de Lectura Guiadas la próxima semana - salvo los estudiantes que leyeron Verano de Fuego que terminó antes.

Hemos empezado con el libro Esperanza Rising qué es un cuento interesante de los riqueza-a-pobreza, dónde una adinerada familia mexicana pierde todo y se muda a los Estados Unidos a trabajar en los campos. El libro es basado en la vida de la abuela del autor. Estaremos observando por qué las personas inmigran, de dónde ellos emigran, y a dónde ellos inmigran. Nosotros miraremos la diferencia entre los Estados Unidos *"melting pot" y el “mosaico” Canadiense
*melting pot. (es una metáfora que representa el proceso de inmigración y colonización, en el cual los ingredientes dentro de la olla {personas de distintas nacionalidades, culturas y étnias} se funden, para formar una nueva comunidad, generando con ello una sociedad multiétnica. Este término es usado comúnmente para describir a las sociedades que reciben grandes cantidades de inmigrantes de distintos paises. )

También estamos empezando una nueva unidad en matemática - una unidad de la geometría dónde nosotros investigaremos cómo describir y clasificar las figuras bidimensionales, medida de ángulos, hallar el perímetro y área de rectángulos, y crear y describir las formas simétricas. Esta unidad tiene un componente de tecnología el cual será interesante.
Nosotros también estamos empezando los mini-unidad en la división de la sílaba y cómo esto ayuda con nuestra ortografía y capitalización.

Now that was a grrrrrrrreeaaat Living Museum. I am so proud of each and every student. You did a marvelous job with posters, with presentations, with costumes. We were all impressed. Thanks, parents, for your participation in the projects and as honored guests.

Math Test Friday

Math test covers: Adding decimals, subtracting decimals, comparing decimals, and understanding the relationship between fractions, decimals, money, and percentages.
For example, if I give the students the fraction 1/4, they need to tell me that one-fourth is equal to 0.25, $0.25, and 25%. We've been working hard on internalizing these concepts. Students must also be able to tell what common percentages would be. For example 50% of 100 is 50; and 50% of 50 is 25.

Swimming

Monday the 10th starts 4 weeks of swimming instruction. Students need to bring bathing suit, towel, bathing cap - if students have long hair, footwear, and gym bag or plastic bag.

Inspirational

We had the pleasure of a visit from David Dalkey who spoke to the class about how to deal with people who make fun of you. Mr. Dalkey, who has never been able to walk, shared how schoolmates made fun of him. He figured that people who would mock others must really need friends, and so he befriended those very same people who put him down. He also shared how he refused to let his disability get him down, how he played football (on his knees) with his brothers growing up, and how his parents always told him he could do whatever he wanted to.

Nosotros tuvimos el placer de la visita de David Dalkey que habló a la clase sobre cómo tratar con las personas que se burlan de ti. Sr. Dalkey que nunca ha podido caminar compartió cómo sus compañeros se burlaban de él. Visit from Sgt. Toby Erwin

Sgt. Erwin, a policeman in St. Augustine, Florida, recently spoke to the class about integrity and the need for that character trait in the police department and in our lives. He was wonderful with the class and drew them into a thoughtful discussion.

Halloween

My goodness, I think we had the most special class party I've ever seen! The room was spookily decorated with incredible attention to detail, the food itself was delicious and theme-oriented, and the party was well-organized. Many thanks to our room mom, Maria Elena, and all the other parents who baked, decorated, and attended. You're the best!

A Few Reminders About the Native American/Pioneer Living Museum

This is not simply a research project - you must DO something that the Native Americans and/or pioneers did.
For example, you can't just research how they made butter, you also have to make the butter.
You must make a poster.
You may demonstrate your skill in person or in a video.
You must dress up like a native American or a pioneer.
Parents are invited.
The big date is Wednesday, November 12th 1 - 2:15 pm.
I can't wait to see your projects!
