Building Background Knowledge - Construyendo Conocimiento básico.

When we read, the more we already know about a subject the better we understand what we read. Logical? When we don't know much about something we are reading, we need to build our background knowledge.

Right now, the students are reading historical fiction about Native Americans. To build background knowledge they can talk to people who know something about this subject, page through books, and look through web sites. They can see how the Native Americans dressed, where they lived, and thus understand their books better.

We are also reading a book called Sign of the Beaver by Elizabeth George Speare as a class. The group that was reading The Listening Silence decided to switch (with my blessing) to Sing Down the Moon.

Cuando nosotros leémos, mientras más conozcamos sobre el asunto mejor entenderemos lo que estamos leyendo ¿Lógico? Cuando nosotros no sabemos mucho sobre algo que estamos leyendo, nosotros necesitamos construir nuestro conocimiento básico.
Ahora mismo, los estudiantes están leyendo la ficción histórica sobre los Nativos Americanos. Para construir la base ellos pueden hablar con las personas que saben algo sobre este asunto, pueden compaginar a través de los libros, y pueden conocer a través de los sitios web. Ellos pueden ver cómo los americanos Nativos vistieron, dónde ellos vivieron, y así puede entender bien sus libros.
Nosotros también estamos leyendo un libro llamado “Sign of the Beaver” (Señal del Castor) por Elizabeth George Speare, como una clase. El grupo que estaba leyendo "The Listening Silence" (Escuchando el Silencio) decidió cambiar (con mi aprobación) para “Sing Down the Moon” Cantar Abajo la Luna.
